IC USERNAME: zero.day
HISTORY: Kabliznam.
PERSONALITY: Tyrell is a thin layer of ice cold charisma over a veritable lake of boiling crazy. He comes across as the consummate businessman, which is a very defining aspect of his personal identity. His initial affect is that of being professional in all ways, precise in everything he says, smiling and laughing at the right moments, seemingly entirely detached and disaffected to the point where he is aware he comes across cold by accident and attempts to correct it. When he isn't under pressure, or under an acceptable amount of pressure, the worst impression he can give is that he's a little too smooth, a little too chilly, and every conversation feels a bit like a transaction.
When under too much pressure, which is increasingly more frequent due to recent events, the veneer starts to crack. He pauses too long before his precise words formulate, or his laughter becomes more awkward and forced, or there is a hesitation before he switches on a smile. It's then that he comes across as a little unhinged and a little dangerous, in a way that's difficult to define unless you get the automatic sense that he is only barely containing a propensity to lose his fucking mind with rage when driven to it. Anger is usually triggered by not getting what he wants, or being made to feel like he lacks control in any significant way. He is susceptible to panic and bad decisions and petulance and yelling, on a disproportionate scale.
At his core, he is consumed by ambition, as well as a desire for control, and the latter may dictate the former. Money, in the world of Mr Robot (and, you know, the real world) is basically a divinely controlling force, making power and money bedfellows. He has had a taste of what real wealth is like, and what real power is like, and will stop at nothing to get it. He has a sort of shamelessness that can be played well (or "steady"), such as seducing his boss's secretary and bugging his phone, or come across desperate, such as his failed attempts to mindgame Sharon Knowles. At his lowest point, he resorts to begging not to be fired, when there is nothing else he can do.
This lack of self-control makes his relationship with 'control' in general very complicated. He craves it (in the way it ties into money and power) and it seeps into all aspects of his life, from his physical appearance, his sense of tidiness and order, his interactions and conversations with others, and his sex life. While he defaults to wanting to be in control always, he appreciates power games and back and forth exchanges, as seen in the dynamics he shares with his wife, who he seems able to be his honest self with. (Save for that one time he lied about murder and lost his mind.)
But he is also genuinely intelligent and driven in a way that is, in the real world, commendable. He cites having been an engineer, once, and remains in touch with these skills despite being an executive, so one can assume he was a good engineer. He is articulate and observant, good at identifying weakness in others, and was savvy enough in business and socialising to climb the corporate ladder to swift, dizzying heights. His cold affect is belied by having a wealth of feeling, as demonstrated above, but he seems to genuinely love his wife to the point where he considers her to share in all his glory, and works with her to achieve his goals, or rather, their goals. His newborn son is important to him, and for all his crazy ambition is unsettling and absolutely ruthless, wanting to create the life he pictures for his family, perhaps establish a legacy, seems central to this motivation as well.
His canon point will be after he has impulsively murdered Sharon Knowles, been fired from his job, and been kicked out of his family by his wife. He will be following Elliot Alderson down the rabbit hole, whether as a last ditch attempt to save himself or get his revenge (which would be so disappointingly ordinary of him), whether he's playing Elliot or wishes to work with him or make him work for him, it's hard to say, and at this stage, even Tyrell doesn't know, but it is probable he is looking for another play. An escape.
He will be at the end of his rope, although still capable of exuding calm and control, absorbing this whole 'murderer' aspect of his identity to his benefit. Clockbox should bring out some interesting qualities.
(Note: Mr Robot is a show seen through the eyes, mostly, by an unreliable narrator. Information is routinely hidden from the audience, and there's no doubt in my mind that there are reveals to come that fill in blanks for any given character. As a result, some of the motivations and thoughts I have above for Tyrell may be subject to retcon, but by avoiding invention of specific headcanons, I don't expect to have problems reinterpreting his actions in game as needed. If he's a robot I'll update to reflect his robot powers accordingly.)
INVENTORY: He will be wearing business formal attire, all of impeccable quality. He also has a wedding ring, and an Audemars Piguet watch.
